#Hair Trends: What’s Trending In L.A.?

Since the dawn of the Golden Age of Cinema, the “seat” of hair trends is Los Angeles. Home to the who’s who of Hollywood elite, celebrity hairdressers collaborate with leading fashion houses to predict and shape trends in hair style & color. Traditionally, the biggest names in Hollywood hair have all been rocking different takes of hair trends…but this year, something odd happened. All throughout L.A., salon by salon…everyone was on the same page.

The dominant hair trends? The mid-length chop, bangs of all varieties, and blunt-yet-textured ends, but all custom tailored to the individual. While this summer we’ll see all many of bolder trends emerging on Instagram (Cher hair, 70s shags & all manner of fashion color), these L.A. looks will endure as the most street worthy in your salon.

#1: Bobs & Bangs

One of the best examples of a modern take on the classic bob emerges from the Benjamin Arts District salon of Sal Salcedo who presents this twist on this iconic look: the bob cut right to the lips, the bangs cut above the eyebrows, slightly longer at the temples, and blended into the length. Salcedo calls this look his “modern French-y”, with a gamine effect given off by the bangs. It works for any length, but looks best for clients who are daring enough to rock this look.”

#2: Blunt, Textured Ends

For over two decades, the lob has been one of summer’s best loved hairstyles. What’s new for 2017? Natural texture – and lots of it! This updated version incorporates a strong perimeter to achieve the blunt finish with lots of choppy layers added in for drama & dimension. Celebrity hairstylist Riawna Capri recently gave Nina Dobrev & Selena Gomez this look and says what makes this look great is that it “gives a great, strong focus to the face, neck and shoulders.”

#2: Mid-Length Cut

The average mid-length cut can be more “ho hum” than “wow”, so the key to make it pop is to add a few special touches to add drama and interest. Simply add long, choppy layers and keep the length just past the collarbone, only layering as needed to remove weight. This style is great for the client who wants a subtle change without compromising too much length. As a general rule of thumb, opt for less layering for fine to medium weight hair; more for thicker and curly hair.
